Is fear holding you back?
I got a bill in the mail yesterday.
It was for my car registration. The total seemed a bit high, but I shrugged my shoulders, threw it into my "to do" pile, and decided to deal with it another time.
About an hour later, while feeling bored while I was on a conference call, I decided to organize my receipts by month. It's bookkeeping time.
That's when I found it.
The other bill for my car registration that was due in September! The letter I had opened earlier this morning was my late notice. I gasped. I have been driving around in my car with expired tags for TWO MONTHS!
I immediately went online and paid my registration, but that wasn't enough. Thoughts of further penalties filled my mind. I started to think about all the places I drove to including a six-hour round trip drive to wine country!
You may be thinking; it's just a bill for your car registration. Stop freaking out!
But it's a symptom of a much larger problem - I'm avoiding my finances.
I didn't miss an important bill; I also avoided my bookkeeping all year. Now I have to take away chunks of time every weekend between now and the end of the year to catch up. I also haven't looked at my bank accounts in weeks because I'm afraid of what I will see.
Owning your own business is not easy. I have income, yes, but it's not consistent. Gone are the days of a guaranteed paycheck every other week. Now weeks can go by without any pay, and it's challenged me in ways I never knew possible.
I went from never thinking about money, to thinking about it always, to avoiding it all together because of the amount of stress it gives me.
As a result, I'm missing important things like paying my bills on time and not paying attention to the events leading up to me owing money to the IRS.
This is all hugely embarrassing for me to write but it's essential for me to share with you. As much as I look like I have my shit together, I am making many of the same mistakes.
Thank you, Universe for the wake-up call!
It's time to slow down, meditate, be aware, and focus on those areas of my life that I'm avoiding so I can make it better.
